Alamosa, Colorado is way up high in the mountains.
Nobody was traveling that day, so I had the roads mostly to myself.
Where I come from, there's only rolling hills and fields. There's something majestic about being in the mountains.
This cool place was outside of town...
...But it had no relation to the Navajo Nation. I traveled across Navajo lands to get to...
...Four Corners Monument. I couldn't believe they charged three bucks to get into this place. Then again, I DID drop three bucks for the Million Dollar Museum, so I shouldn't judge.
Four Corners is the exact spot where Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado all meet.
A monument marker is built into the ground, in what the book Roadside America calls "America's Most Arbitrary Photo Opportunity."
Here's the marker. It's about the size of a CD.
I took the traditional spread-eagled "Look-Ma-I'm-in-four-states-at-once" pose, splitting my brain between Utah and Colorado for good measure.
Soon after I got to Monument Valley.
Monument Valley was made famous as a movie location for lots of classic westerns.
There's lots of amazing formations, like "Mexican Hat."
It's one of the best places in North America to take pictures of your car.
The rocks served as inspiration for the desert Wile E Coyote always chased Road Runner through.
I felt like I'd seen Forrest Gump running here too.
Finally I headed West towards Nevada.
I was bored of CDs, so I turned on an episode of Knight Rider.
It was the one where Michael Knight and KITT have to stop the black market arms dealers from stealing from the Army.
Don't worry. I wasn't watching tv and driving. Just listened to it like radio.
The sun set as Michael and KITT stopped the bad guys. They shared a good laugh with Bonnie and Devon and everything worked out all right.
This was a spooky sight as I neared the border.
I spent the night at Virgin River, the Wal-Mart of casinos. It's located just inside the Nevada border.
I stayed there instead of pushing on to Vegas 'cause it was sooooo much cheaper.
The painting on the hotel room wall looked familiar - I had just driven past the real thing a few hours before!
